Settling independently | No dummy | No rocking
“She is a different baby now and a much happier baby too” – Sophie, Poppy’s mum.
Recently I visited 4 month old Poppy and her mum Sophie during the day for a 2 hour consult.
Sophie had worked hard to establish a great day time routine for Poppy!
Her day sleeps were spot on timing wise (on the odd occasion she would need a resettle over her lunch nap). But she was fully rocked to sleep and she needed the dummy to help her settle, this had lead to overnight wake ups becoming more and more frequent.
Poppy needed her dummy replaced or to be rocked back to sleep. While this was sustainable for a short time, after 4 months it was becoming exhausting for mum, and Poppy was showing signs she was ready to start settling independently. She was ready.
**Sophie’s goals were to get Poppy to settle independently and to get her wake ups down to just two overnight. Both of these goals are totally achievable at this age, given the fact that Poppy is thriving developmentally and weight wise. **
I arrived well before the time we would need to start settling so we could have a thorough discussion on what settling strategy would be best suited to Poppy’s temperament.
We decided to use spaced soothing as our settling strategy with short interval as Sophie said that she feels Poppy needs the space to settle independently.
We also decided to get rid of the dummy since Poppy is too young to replace it herself and it would be contributing to the frequent wake ups because of falling out.
Nap time came; Sophie did her usual wind down routine.
We popped her in her cot without the dummy and we waited…...
She did a few minutes of on off grizzling, trying to very hard to put herself to sleep. We did one check in to help wee Poppy calm, put her back in her cot and off she went to sleep after a little grizzle.
No dummy, no rocking!
All she needed was a little bit of space to get herself off to sleep. Sophie could not quite believe it, she did it…in less than 10 minutes..Poppy was asleep – by herself, NO DUMMY OR ROCKING!!!!
Over our time working together, Poppy settled into the routine with great ease. No settling was even needed by day 2, Poppy adjusted like a champ.
Our plan was to continue with two feeds overnight, but Poppy decided to start sleeping through the night without any feeds – no training done to achieve this, she did it all by herself!
When our babies show signs they are ready to start sleeping independently, sleep plans fall into place very quickly.
She now sleeps from 6.30pm-7am!
"Just want to say a huge thank you for your help with Poppy. She is a different baby now, and a happier baby!
She is sleeping from 6:30pm to 7am each night, settling herself easily back to sleep if she wakes up and almost no grizzling now when she is put down for her sleep.
This is the same with all her day naps as well, it has been so much easier! We have got rid of the dummy and she now has a cuddly that she loves and can easily grab now that both her arms are free now.
Thank you so much for coming in and teaching me how to get Poppy to self settle and for all your help afterwards. You've been so lovely and supportive.
It's hard going through a change like that so thank you for all your help, it's been so much easier having you there to chat to and ask questions.
Would love to keep in touch as I'm sure Poppy will go through more stages that I'll need help with! :)" ~Soph - Poppy's mum
