Hey new mum…… newborn sleep is hard

Dear younger me (aka new mum!)

Listen to the voice of experience…you now have 2 kids, aged 4 and 6. You’ve learnt a few things along the way, although some days still involve a lot of educated guesses!

Relax! Stop over analyzing things. You can’t figure it all out and you’ll drive yourself nuts trying. I know it can be hard to keep up with their changes and why today is so different from yesterday, but one bad day does not mean it has all hit the fan!

Its ok to hold them to sleep – you are not making a rod for your own back. Newborns often need help settling to sleep and can be fussy wee things, so enjoy the snuggles. Newborn sleep is hard work. Remember, if it’s working for you, then it works.

Baby wear – when you discover it with your second child you will wish you did it sooner! So much easier for naps on the go or on hard days.

Breast feeding can be hard! You presumed because it was natural, it should be easy. Sorry to burst your bubble but it’s not. Eat, drink, rest, talk to your midwife and don’t be afraid to speak to a lactation consultant.

Stop doing everything yourself and get your husband to help more. I know it’s hard to hand over control because he doesn’t do it right or it’s easier to do it yourself, but he’s apart of this journey too. You’ll tire yourself out by doing everything yourself.

Get out more! Who cares if there are things to be done at home. Take care of you by staying connected to the outside world. Meet a friend for coffee or at the playground.

Make time for you. You need a break and down time just for you. Read a book, have a bath or go for a walk. Do whatever feeds your soul! You won’t regret making the effort.

Sleep – if you know it’s so important then why aren’t you doing it?!

Enjoy your little one, because the days may be long but the years are short!

Yours Sincerely,

Samantha Krukerink
